Mokuleia Residence, North Shore Oahu

A twist on a classic

North Shore Oahu provides beauty unseen making it a perfect place to create a building that works with that beauty. Starting from the grand entry gate, a looped driveway brings the user from the street front through agricultural fields to the home itself situated close to the shoreline. The Mokuleia Residence is a four-bedroom single-family home positioned among agricultural plants such as pineapple, lychee, and mangoes.

The design of this home speaks to traditional architecture in Hawaii with a hint towards modernity. This residence has a transparency that allows the ocean breeze to flow through the space, greeting you upon entry. Expansive glazing, fully functioning sliding doors, and generous overhangs allow light to permeate through the space indirectly while providing a cooling effect for the interior space. Wrap-around lanais provide access to the outdoors in almost every room while contributing to the overhang for floors below.

Natural stone and wood are integrated throughout the home embodying the natural space the home is surrounded by. All around the home, there are views of various natural features such as the ocean & mountains through ample glazing opportunities. As the site is heavily planted and easily accessible, there is always a feeling of being connected to the environment; one of the truest forms of living in Hawaii.

Beyond the plantings of the site, this home features multiple chances to engage with the landscape. The stained concrete pavers leading to the entry of the home integrate into planted areas encouraging the senses to emerge with the plants. The BBQ Area located in the back of the home is shaded by a trellis, creating a space to gather and play. The fire pit located just near the BBQ Area provides comfort for those starry-filled nights with the ocean’s cold breeze. Possibly the main feature of the immediate site is the infinity pool angled directly towards the ocean, the inspiration of the infinity.
